Dynamic Finite Element Model Updating Using Simulated Annealing and Genetic Algorithms

Dynamic Fini te Element (FE) model updat ing may be considered as an opt imisat ion process . Over the pas t few years two powerful new opt imisa t ion a lgor i thms have been developed independent ly of each other, namely simulated annealing and the genetic algori thm. These are bo th probabi l i s t i c search a lgor i thms capable of f inding the global minimum amongst many local minima for a given object ive funct ion. This paper compares the two algori thms for model updating purposes. These algorithms are tested on several object ive funct ions for model updat ing in both the modal and frequency domain, using simulated data.
